Eden observed the murky alley Cedric had just turned into, her heart full of misgivings. The hustle and bustle of Grant Avenue faded behind her as she headed after him.

They’d spent most of the morning moving furtively across town, Cedric taking a convoluted route to their destination while sticking to crowded places they could easily lose themselves in. He’d refused to tell her exactly where they were going or whom they were going to see. If it weren’t for the fact that he’d saved her life and knew something about her bloodcursed magic, Eden would have dumped his stubborn ass.

Graffiti-covered doors and dumpsters lined the passageway they’d entered. Steam from vents and air conditioning units swirled around the fire escapes rising up the back walls of the buildings crowding a narrow strip of sky. Eden tensed slightly as they passed several people sleeping on the ground and a makeshift cardboard tent where a homeless man sat reading a paper, his dog on his lap. The animal growled when it saw them. Cedric glanced at it, eyes narrowing for a moment.

The dog whimpered and burrowed its head in its master’s chest.

Eden swallowed a sigh. Great. Now he’s scaring small animals.

Cedric muttered something under his breath, twisted the handle, and headed inside. Eden hesitated before following him.

The door closed behind them with a clack, the chimes hanging off the top of the frame ringing with a joviality that didn’t match the murky interior. It took a few seconds for her eyes to adjust to the gloom. Cedric was already forging ahead, his steps sure as he navigated a cramped corridor between the tightly packed display cabinets that lined the wooden floor, their shelves crowded with merchandise.

Eden stared distractedly at the strange objects mounted on the walls and overspilling the racks as she hastened her pace and went after him. Low voices reached them when they neared the back of the shop. They turned a corner and slowed to a stop.

“Oh, come on, man! That Rolex is worth at least six grand. You gotta give me more than that!”

A skinny guy in a dark top and jogging bottoms that hung perilously low on his hips was leaning on a counter protected by glass and metal bars. He
